Both the Kona Electric and the Blazer EV have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

The Hyundai Kona Electric has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2025 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, and a “Good” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test. The Blazer EV has not yet been fully evaluated by the IIHS for 2025.

Warranty

The Kona Electric comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Blazer EV’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Hyundai’s powertrain warranty covers the Kona Electric 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Chevrolet covers the Blazer EV. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Blazer EV ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Kona Electric’s corrosion warranty is 1 year and unlimited miles longer than the Blazer EV’s (7/unlimited vs. 6/100,000).

Hyundai pays for scheduled maintenance on the Kona Electric for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Hyundai will pay for tire rotations, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Chevrolet only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Blazer EV.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Kona Electric’s reliability 45 points higher than the Blazer EV.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Hyundai 6 places higher in reliability than Chevrolet.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the Kona Electric’s turning circle is 4.9 feet tighter than the Blazer EV’s (34.8 feet vs. 39.7 feet).

Chassis

The Hyundai Kona Electric may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 1500 to 1600 pounds less than the Chevrolet Blazer EV.

The Kona Electric is 1 foot, 8.7 inches shorter than the Blazer EV, making the Kona Electric easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Kona Electric is 6.1 inches narrower than the Blazer EV, making the Kona Electric easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

The front grille of the Kona Electric uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Blazer EV doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Kona Electric’s rear seats recline. The Blazer EV’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Kona Electric has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Blazer EV with its rear seat folded (63.7 vs. 59.1 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

The Kona Electric N-Line/Limited’s front power windows both open or close with one touch of the switches. The Blazer EV’s front passenger window doesn’t close automatically.

The Kona Electric’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Chevrolet charges extra for heated mirrors on the Blazer EV.

The Kona Electric has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning is only available on the Blazer EV RS.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends the Hyundai Kona Electric, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Chevrolet Blazer EV isn't recommended.

A group of representative automotive journalists from North America selected the Kona as the 2019 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year. The Blazer EV has never been chosen.

The Hyundai Kona outsold the Chevrolet Blazer by 12% during 2024.
